Big brush that makes loads of lather

Posted by Si on 12th Apr 2016

I've used this brush for a bit over 4 months now and I think it's time to share my experiences. NOTE: I only face lather and haven't tried bowl lathering with this. I recommend face lathering since it saves time and prepares your face better. This is my third shaving brush, the first one being a floppy, borderline unusable Edwin Jagger badger brush and the second one the Semogue 620 boar brush which is a bit too small for my preference. The Omega 48 is definitely big enough, it can hold a lot of soap and it makes a lot of lather. I bought it because with my previous purchase, the 620, I didn't have enough lather left by the third pass and I often had to re-lather. Now I have more than enough. I usually squeeze the lather out of the brush for my final pass and it's enough to give a generously thick coating. This is a big brush and there is a small downside to the large size: it makes it a bit awkward to load up soap from standard-size containers such as the Proraso soap tubs and the bowl that comes with Tabac. Instead of making circles on top of the soap like you do with standard-sized brushes I instead end up doing a twisting motion to load up the brush. This is a minor gripe though and obviously not a problem at all when using creams. The brush did have an unpleasant smell at first but that was completely gone after a few uses. I didn't pay much attention to the breaking in of the brush but the brush is now nice and soft and it still has a nice backbone. It did perform very well on the first shaves so that isn't a problem. The handle is fairly large which is especially good if you have big hands. A good way to grip the brush is to place the bottom of the handle on your palm and grip the top of the handle with your fingers. This is a good brush, especially if you like to use lots of lather. I heartily recommend it. Great value too.

    I'm happy with it

I'm not an expert on shaving or anything I just know I want a nice smooth shave and having the right brush seems to help. I've gone from disposable razor to Mach 3 etc to cheap DE razor to good Merkur from this site and every step is an improvement. To me this brush is just another addition to my collection of the right tools for the job

    A beast of a brush!

The Omega 48 is considerably larger than the norm (Handle Length: 68mm, Bristle Length: 65mm, Overall Length: 133mm, Bristle Diameter: 30mm). It is a substantial product and fantastic value for money. The smell of boar disappeared after a couple of uses (Tip: Lather it up and let it sit overnight). Given the extra large handle, it has a great grip for big hands, and it's especially good with lathering soaps. I have four brushes and this one looks very distinctive and cool on the shelf. I'd have to say this is my favorite, even above my fancy (and expensive) badger brush. Fast delivery from Shaving.ie. I thoroughly recommend this brush.

    Big, soft and performs well

This has been my starter brush. It is a large brush with long bristles, but I like that, the sensation is luxurious and the grip comfortable. Working lather is produced quickly in a bowl and it spreads evenly on the face with just light brushing. The brush easily loads up enough lather to last throughout even a long, multi-pass shave.

    Omega 48 Pro

I've had this brush for years and it’s used in rotation. It is as good as the day it arrived. It does everything a shaving brush should do and looks like it will last for ever. It’s built like a tank! It lathers up and applies beautifully and holds water as well as any brush I own. Can’t fault it.

    Good quality Omaga 48

This the first brush I've had so I can't compare with other models, but I'm quite happy with it. I've noticed that boar hair is a lot softer if hydrated before use. I fill my shaving bowl with cold tap water and put the brush's hair in it while I take my shower. Then it's a lot softer on the skin, and it makes a better foam. Considering the low price, I would recommend it.
