Arko, Making Shaving Soap in Turkey Since 1957
Arko is the shaving brand of the Turkish manufacturer Evyap, and it is the name that comes up more than any other when wet shavers talk about value. The range is built around soap in its two familiar formats, the red wrapped stick and the tub, and it has widened over the years into shaving creams, foams, gels, aftershave colognes and blades. Only part of that catalogue makes it to Ireland, so what you see below is what we can supply.
The brand started in 1957, when Evyap produced the first industrially made shaving soap in Turkey and put it out in the red cylinder people still recognise on a bathroom shelf. A shaving cream followed in 1960 and the line kept expanding from there. The parent company goes back further again, founded in 1927 as a soap maker, and it now runs production sites in Turkey, Egypt and Malaysia and sells in more than 100 countries.
Part of the reason the price stays where it does is that Evyap makes its own raw material.
Arko is the usual answer to the question of what to try first. It lathers fast, asks nothing special of your brush, and costs little enough that a beginner can find out whether soap and brush suit them without much of an outlay.
