Pasta del Capitano 1905: Italian Pharmacy Heritage Since 1905
Pasta del Capitano 1905 is one of Italy's older names in oral care, known for a range of toothpastes built around distinctive flavours and specific concerns, from a whitening formula to a charcoal variant and one aimed specifically at smokers. It's a brand many Italian households have used for generations, and one that's found its way onto bathroom shelves well beyond Italy since.
The story starts with Clemente Ciccarelli, a captain in the Italian Royal Army who trained as a chemist. In 1905 he began making a paste-based toothpaste in his family's pharmacy, at a time when most people in Italy were still using tooth powder rather than paste, making it one of the first toothpastes the country had seen. His son Nicola later put his father's portrait and signature on every pack, a simple way of guaranteeing it was still the same formula.
Production moved to Milan in 1950, where the Ciccarelli family still runs the company today. The toothpastes are built around Sulfetal Zn, a patented zinc-based ingredient the family developed themselves, which combines zinc's antibacterial properties with a coconut-derived cleaning agent to help slow the build-up of plaque. None of the formulas use SLS, triclosan or parabens.
It's the kind of brand that's stuck around by doing one thing well rather than chasing every new trend in oral care, which is really why it's still worth a place in a grooming routine well over a century later.
