Semogue 1800 Shaving Brush

Semogue 1800 Shaving Brush is the one people call the banded boar, after the dark stripe running through the bristle. That band is what the IB in its grade name refers to: imitation badger, a boar knot finished to resemble badger hair.

It's a middling size in Semogue's range, with enough bristle to hold a full shave's worth of lather without the knot becoming too broad to place accurately. Like all boar, the tips only get better with use, softening steadily while the brush keeps its structure underneath.

Bristle brushes exfoliate as they work, lifting the beard away from the skin ahead of the razor, and the 1800 does that with a comfortable feel once it's settled in.

The handle is ash, left natural and matte, and narrowed through the middle so the grip stays secure. At 114mm overall, it's a well-balanced, everyday size.

How to Use

• Soften a new knot with three or four long soaks in warm water
• Leave the brush damp, not wet, before it touches the soap
• Load with a firm circular motion for around twenty seconds
• Build on the face and add water in small amounts until the lather turns glossy
• Rinse and leave to dry with the knot facing down
